Madeline Stuart’s Advocacy: Down Syndrome In New York Fashion Week
Madeline Stuart, an Australian-born model with Down Syndrome is making history launching her label on a collection of sporty leggings, crop tops and skirts on Feb 12 during the New York Fashion Week. She already made a name two years ago when she walked the runway as her debut.
Ascribed for her advocacy to change the insight about down syndrome in 2015, Madeline Stuart aims to do the same this year with her "21 Reasons Why by Madeline Stuart" as her label on New York Fashion Week. Signifying the condition of a person having the twenty-first extra chromosome and the model's twenty-first natal makes sense putting the name of Stuart's label.
"It really does represent who she is. Madeline has never had the concept that she can't achieve anything," said her Manager, designer and Mother Roseanne Stuart on CNN Style. After the 2015 breakthrough, Madeline Stuart has been around the globe and different US Cities modeling. She proves that down syndrome is no hindrance for her to shine as a top model, even during New York Fashion Week.
Medically, according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, down syndrome may result in the peculiar physical development and mild-to-moderate mental development. There are also risk factors that need precise attention but he should not be treated with special attention but thorough understanding. The center also explained that there are three types of this condition. However, it does not stop people from outshining star models in New York Fashion Week and it started with Madeline Stuart and her advocacy. In an annual report, there are 6000 infants in the US with down syndrome and this is typically in a ratio of one baby in every 700 born.
National Down Syndrome Society President Sara Hart Weir expressed, "By debuting her own fashion line and becoming a businesswoman, Madeline Stuart is showing other individuals with Down syndrome that is it OK to have your own hopes and aspirations. The expectations for children with Down syndrome are higher than ever." The New York Fashion Week is one of the best venues to create awareness through fashion.
