As a celebration of the 100th birthday of the founding father of Danish Modern design, Hans Wegner, Carl Hansen teamed up with American textile manufaturer Maharam and recreated a fresh take on Wegner’s classic furniture pieces.

Carl Hansen is a Danish furniture company that manufactures most of Wegner’s works.
Maharam’s star artist and fashion designer Paul Smith lent his hand in selecting the chairs to include in the collection. Out of the 500 designs that Wegner designed until his death in 2007, Smith selected the Shell, Wishbone, Wing, CH 163 sofa and the Lounge Chairs. Smith then paired these furniture pieces with his own Big Stripe and Stripes woven wool fabrics.

The pieces, which will be sold in as a limited edition will be launched at the International Furniture Fair. The collection will be available through until the end of the year. Prices will range from $ 4,750 to $13,300.

Hans J. Wegner is considered as one of the pioneering founders of Danish modernism and minimalist furniture design. His furniture pieces demonstrate Wegner’s knowledge and expertise of great Danish craftsmanship.

Wegner has produced many iconic modern classic chairs such as the Wishbone and Shell chairs which still continue to be popular amongst lovers of minimalist design. Wegner has also been a recipient of design awards and some of his works have been on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Aside from the American makeover of Wegner’s classics, his works will also be exhibited at Designmuseum Danmark. “Just One Good Chair” is another celebration of the designer’s 100th year and will run from April 3- November 2, 2014.
