CN Tower Architect Roger Du Toit Wins RAIC 2017 Two Years After He Died
Late CN Tower architect Roger du Toit was just recently announced as the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal recipient. The award is the highest honor Canada gives to celebrate one's contribution to the country's built environment.
According to Dezeen, Roger du Toit was considered as one of Canada's top architects because of his prowess in creating a structure that is timelessly related to urban environment development. His duToit Allsopp Hillier (DTAH) was well-received by many.
At the age of 75, du Toit left the architecture scene in his death. He died after sustaining cycling injuries after an accident. He won RAIC Gold Medal two years after. Though, the recognition is never too late to commemorate his legacies.
"He developed a unique career that transcended traditional understanding of architectural practice," RAIC five-member selection jury detailed regarding his win. "His work encompassed planning, urban design, community development, and architecture, they continued.
CN Tower, the world's tallest freestanding structure, isn't his only masterpiece. RAIC 2017 juries also noted his Distillery District, Queens Quay and the Downtown South Urban Design. Furthermore, he also collaborated with other design studios, communities and groups. All of them spoke of his architectural talent in leading Canada towards urban development.
In addition, Architect Magazine also shared interesting details about Roger du Toit Royal Architectural Institute of Canada win. When he died in 2015, his works across the globe are his legacy to his loved ones. This coming May, his wife, Sheila, and sons, Rob and Andre will receive Roger's RAIC 2017 Gold Medal in his place. They will accept it at RAIC/Ontario Association of Architects Festival of Architecture in Ottawa.
The four-day celebration will celebrate the role of architecture in building cultural heritage. All the remarkable structures will be highlighted here as their reflection of Canadian values as well. In relation to du Toit, his works will be an inspiration to many other rising talents today.
