Tirana, the vibrant capital of Albania, is poised to undergo a transformative change in its skyline with the unveiling of Hora Vertikale, an innovative stacked tower designed by Portuguese architecture studio OODA. With a vision to redefine urban living and engage the local community, Hora Vertikale introduces a vertical settlement that not only challenges traditional architectural norms but also mirrors the dynamic nature of Tirana's urban fabric. This article explores the unique design, sustainable features, and community-focused approach that make Hora Vertikale a groundbreaking project for the Albanian capital.

Design Concept

OODA architects draw inspiration from the complex urban fabric of Tirana to produce designs that blend seamlessly with the dynamic cityscape. Due to the use of locally sourced materials from Albania, which lower carbon emissions and strengthen the local economy, sustainability is given top priority. Hora Vertikale is intended to be more than just a collection of residential towers; it is called a "Hora" in ancient Albanian, and it extends beyond its tall buildings to include a new park and a variety of amenities. The project is intended to become an iconic landmark, an example of how urban and rural elements can coexist, and a representation of the rich architectural history of Tirana.

Distinctive Architecture

The architectural language of Hora Vertikale is defined by abstraction and synthesis, focusing on offering a specific interpretation of Tirana's unique character. The project comprises thirteen stacked cubes, each measuring 22.5 meters by 22.5 meters at three different heights. These cubes, organized in a playful arrangement, create a fluid and dynamic profile, setting the stage for Hora Vertikale to become a visual landmark in Tirana's architectural landscape. The intentional stepping back of the compositions from the main road towards the park at the rear creates a transition in scale, providing a nuanced experience for both residents and passersby.

The thirteen stacked cubes are not just architectural elements; they embody a deeper meaning. OODA has employed seven different types of cubes, each with seven stories, symbolizing art concepts inspired by local vernacular. This intentional choice reflects a commitment to infusing the project with cultural significance and celebrating Tirana's rich artistic heritage. From a distance, the distinct elevations of Hora Vertikale serve as an abstract symbol of Tirana's mixed fabric, offering shifting perspectives and a sense of monumentality.

Engaging the Community

Hora Vertikale is intended to engage and uplift the local community and be an architectural marvel. The project plans to create a vertical village that encourages connections between residents and visitors and the natural world through the integration of various amenities and a bustling park. Using locally produced materials promotes sustainable practices and fosters community pride and belonging.

Sustainability and Local Impact

Hora Vertikale's dedication to sustainability is a fundamental component of its design philosophy. By using locally sourced materials and lowering its carbon footprint, the project contributes to environmental conservation. Moreover, purchasing materials boosts the community's economic resilience and the local economy. Hora Vertikale models how architectural innovation can coexist harmoniously with environmental consciousness and community development.

Rising to prominence as a symbol of architectural innovation in Tirana, Hora Vertikale is set to transform the city's skyline and establish a singular vertical village. The careful planning of OODA, which is based on the cultural and urban context of the city, sets a standard for environmentally friendly and neighborhood-focused projects. Hora Vertikale can change Tirana's physical landscape and provide its citizens with a dynamic, connected, and sustainable future as work on the project nears completion of its first phase.
