Kiron Cheerla Architecture’s Pott House Illuminates Hyderabad With Lantern-Like Roof
Kiron Cheerla Architecture, an esteemed Indian design studio renowned for its groundbreaking creations, proudly presents its latest architectural marvel: Pott House. Nestled in the vibrant heart of Hyderabad, Pott House emerges as a beacon of innovation, seamlessly blending timeless aesthetics with modern functionality.
The Unique Design of Pott House
At the core of Pott House's allure lies its distinctive lantern-like roof, meticulously crafted to embrace copious amounts of natural light and ventilation, fostering an atmosphere of serenity and comfort. This unique feature exemplifies the studio's unwavering commitment to elevating the living experience through thoughtful design.
Situated on a garden plot of loose black cotton soil, Pott House boasts a meticulously planned layout anchored by a lightweight gridded structure supported by robust pile foundations. Utilizing locally sourced and cost-effective materials such as Maddi timber, corrugated aluminum, and rough brickwork, the residence exudes an undeniable charm reminiscent of a bygone era, evoking a sense of nostalgia and warmth.
Architectural Influences and Design Strategy
Kiron Cheerla, the visionary founder of the studio, explains, "The design of the house was heavily influenced by the chosen wooden structural system, maintaining a single-story base with a smaller first-floor level. We strategically incorporated north-facing clerestory windows and skylights at the structure's peak to promote natural ventilation, enable passive cooling, and achieve a desired aesthetic effect."

The Pott House's ground floor serves as the home's heart, featuring a spacious living and dining area adorned with exposed timber trusses that gracefully accentuate the steeply sloping roof. Ropes attached to the ground floor windows facilitate a stack ventilation effect, while sunlight filters through slatted wooden panels, casting a mesmerizing glow reminiscent of a flickering lantern. The interior lights emanate outward as night falls, enhancing the enchanting ambiance.
At the North part, full-height glazing and sliding glass doors afford stunning views of the garden landscape and effectively create a natural, flowing connection between the indoors and outdoors. A comfortable terrace with tables is located under the corrugated aluminum roof, encouraging residents to fall into the dwelling's congenial atmosphere.
Interior Design Details
Internally, pomp fills Pott House and invites distinctive features of exposed timber beams and dark paneling that contrasts harmoniously against flickered rough brick walls. Comfortable chairs, soundproofing cupboards, and shelves create a friendly atmosphere, and furniture and accessories such as red brick, orange wooden floor, and cream-colored flooring add a relaxed ambiance to the general environment.
Future Expansion and Sustainability
The current site has a large garden covering most of its area; however, the innovative client has plans for the development of an extended central courtyard with other buildings. This visionary plan speaks volumes about how Pott House fits into the natural context and sets precedence for sustainable and integrated practice for new generations.
Therefore, the decision to locate Pott House can epitomize Kiron Cheerla Architecture's approach to architecture as a pioneer practice in embracing innovation and quality. This house boasts a beautifully distinctive lantern-like roof with an all-rounded finish to match the wet look and perfect interconnectivity of indoor and outdoor features. This deserves the label of contemporary India's best architectural masterpiece.
