Brera Modern Museum to Finally Open in Milan on December 7 After Five Decades of Delays
As the saying goes, better late than never! Brera modern, a new museum to extend the concept of modern art, is proposed to open in Italy's Milan at December 7 over fifty years after its primary planning. The Guardian, on the coming of the much-anticipated launch, stated that it was a dream which has been in the pipeline for the past fifty years.
Integration with Pinacoteca di Brera
It will feature modern artworks of the famous art gallery Pinacoteca di Brera, with which Brera Modern is located in one building. This new gem is on the verge of adding new vision on the already available virtuosi collection of works through arts in the museum that already possesses master pieces works of Canova, Caravaggio as well as Raphael. The ceremony of the opening day will attract more attention as it is held within the framework of the gala premiere of La Scala opera season, thus making the event more of cultural interest.
Angelo Crespi, who took over the helm of the museum in February, will oversee the launch of Brera Modern. Crespi succeeded British-Canadian historian James Bradburne, who, despite his efforts to open the museum during his tenure, completed two four-year terms and was thus ineligible to continue. This change in leadership was part of a broader shift implemented by Italy's hard-right government, which has been appointing Italian nationals to lead major cultural institutions.
Historical Context and Delays
The Brera's journey dates back to its founding in 1809, with a legacy of housing significant works of art. However, many modern art pieces within its collection have remained in storage for years. The delayed opening of the Brera Modern can be attributed to various challenges, including issues with asbestos and problems with the air conditioning system, which have now been resolved.

The significance of the Brera Modern extends beyond its artistic contributions. It symbolizes a renewal and expansion of Milan's cultural landscape, providing a dedicated space for modern art that complements the historical masterpieces in the main Pinacoteca di Brera gallery. This development is expected to enhance the visitor experience, attracting art enthusiasts from around the world.
With the opening of Brera Modern, the institution anticipates a significant increase in visitors. The current museum, Pinacoteca di Brera received 466,709 visitors last year, and authorities hope to attract even more than what the new museum will be able to attract this year, with over 500,000 visitors. It clearly indicates an increasing trend of tourism, Milan's sumptuous cultural heritage and the important place of the Brera in Milan's artistic life.
Evolutionary Step for Milan's Art Scene
The new Brera Modern's debut represents an evolutionary step for Milan art scene and serves the purpose of exhibiting what has been relatively concealed - the modern art. The feeling of preparation for the museum is almost tangible, indicating that it will provide the most valuable experience for the visitors and another creative gem of the city.
The exhibition at the Brera Modern will be the first of such event in Milan and due to this, it will be significant for the development of art in the city as well as bringing out modern art that has largely been ignored. With the grand opening fast approaching, everyone is expecting a lot, starting with the possibility of subjecting people to an enriching experience next to none, and finally a richer cultural capital base for the city at large.
