London's Latest Tiny Home Design Features Hidden Furniture and Multi-Functional Spaces

A recent redesign of a micro apartment in north London's Florin Court revealed some interesting examples of bespoke joinery and how it can really work well in small spaces. 

Measuring 24-square-meter flat within the historic art deco building, Dezeen reported that Guy Morgan and Partners designed the studio by example of efficient living. Originally servant quarters for a larger residence, this apartment now features a striking combination of hidden storage and reconfigurable furniture.

Commissioned by a couple of young artists, the redesign expresses large-scale built-in joinery to conceal and optimize small living spaces. Using fold-down bed designs that could turn into a moveable sofa, collapsible tables inserted into the wall, this design aims at creating the illusion of a larger, more spacious apartment from a small one.

"The brief here was to create joinery for lots of storage and to have it all hidden behind doors to make the apartment feel more spacious," Intervention Architecture founder, Anna Parker said.

Redesigned Flat's Features

One of the standout features of the redesigned flat is the open shelving with an art deco arch motif, paying homage to the historical design of the building. The shelving works both as a library and a visual focus; it also incorporates this arch design cleverly to bring some of Florin Court's heritage into the apartment. 

Additionally, a study nook has been incorporated, complete with an adjustable drawing board, suited to the artistic residents of the apartment.

In contrast to the minimalism in the living room, the kitchen and bathroom come as a shock with their bold color schemes. An International Klein Blue kitchen and blush-pink bathroom tiles are hints of the artistic personality of the owners. 

Although compact, at only two square meters, the kitchen still hosts some essential appliances and storage solutions while providing an immersive color experience.
