Nissan has announced that they are recalling over 226,000 additional vehicles due to an issue with faulty airbags. Back in March, they called back almost half a million vehicles.

The vehicles they have just recalled:

Infiniti JX35 SUV 2013,
Infiniti FX35 2003, Infiniti FX45 2003,
Infiniti I35 2002-2003, Infiniti QX42 2002-2003,
Maxima 2002-2003,
Pathfinder 2002-2003,
Sentra 2002-2004

The vehicles they recalled in March:

Altima 2013-2014
Leaf 2013-2014
Pathfinder 2013-2014
Serra 2013-2014
Taxi Van NV 2013

The defected parts were manufactured by Japanese auto-parts maker Takata, which have a reputation of breaking upon inflation, shooting out dangerous metal fragments into the car.

Nissan said the company was unaware of any injuries caused by the faulty airbags but that they were not taking any chances, thus initiating the callback.

The callback is set to begin on August 11, and will include new airbags installed at the factory, and replacement models. The faulty airbags will be replaced free of charge. All affected owners will be notified of the recall.

Nissan's reason for calling back its vehicles back in March was because the airbags did not deploy in a collision. The company said that it was because the vehicles' sensors were unable to detect a passenger in the front seat, despite whether one being present.

Here is a statement from the company's service contact site:

"Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima, Pathfinder and Infiniti I35 and QX4; 2002-2004 Nissan Sentra and 2003 Infiniti FX vehicles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.

Owners of all vehicles on which a defective air bag may have been installed either as original equipment, or as a replacement, will be notified. Dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 11, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall is an expansion of NHTSA Recall No. 13V-136."
