The Largest Design Trade Show In The United States Comes To Manhattan: Dwell On Design
The media company Dwell is set to host their annual Dwell on Design in New York City next week, Oct. 9 to Oct. 11. The show consists of a three-day design workshop of industry professional-led discussions, allow visitors to view new design installations and generate idea-filled conversations while networking with others in the market.
Dwell on Design began in 2006 in Los Angeles, Calif. and has since evolved into the largest design trade show in the United States that offers attendees the chance to examine new market trends, tour desirable homes and be able to expand their connections within the design realm. Last year, the show managed to attract 31,000 visitors and consume 300,000 square feet of space at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
This year's event will be held at 82MERCER in Manhattan and will host 5,000 attendees, offering 35,000 square feet of space for individuals to communicate their visions, speak on important topics and observe innovative developments of others in the industry.
On-stage discussions will include "Healthy Architecture," "The New Malleable Office," "Reimaging New York City's Terra Firma," and Architecture for Humanity's "Design Like You Give a Damn: Live!" The initiative is to promote design as a way of creating social change, with confirmed speakers for this conference including Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award winners Margie Ruddick and Clive Wilkinson, Vishaan Chakrabarti of SHop Architects, Pentagram partner Michael Bierut, Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award winner and Tony Award nominee David Rockwell, and Designtex CEO Susan Lyons, among others.
The first few days of the show, Thursday, Oct. 9 and Friday, Oct. 10 will be trade days providing architects and designers with CEU opportunities, with programs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. Saturday is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
World-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind will kick off the show on Thursday, Oct. 9 and share his creative background, focusing on his early design influences that generated his signature style.
The popular Dwell Home Tour will open Saturday and showcase modern living spaces in Manhattan from architects Andrew Franz, workshop/apd, 590BC, Charles Rose, Front Studio and Nicholas Moons. The self-guided home tour will be begin at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet the architects of the Home Tour at 82MERCER from 7 to 9 p.m. the night before, on Friday evening.
Ticket prices vary. For students they will start at $15, while a 2-day trade pass is $125 with a portion of the ticket sales to benefit Dwell's non-profit partner Architecture for Humanity. Other industry partners include American Institute of Architects (AIA), and Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Dwell Media's trade partner is National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and media partner, PSFK.

This year marks the fourth annual Archtober, the official architecture and design month featuring activities, programs and exhbitions all month long in Manhattan. Dwell Media transplanted their office to New York in January 2014.
