Starting June 1, 2014, Philadelphia University will be offering the first massive open online course (MOOC) in sustainable design. The course titled “Sustainable Design: Principles and Methodologies” is based on PhilaU’s innovative program in M.S. In Sustainable Design.
This move ushers the university into reaching a larger student body worldwide through the latest technology. The free course will be offered in three levels depending on the needs of the participants.
Rob Fleming, PhilaU’s director in M.S. In Sustainable Design program said, “Philadelphia University’s master program in sustainable design was one of the first of its kind and is still a leader in the field of sustainability education.” Fleming, who will also be teaching the MOOC, added that the new online course, which will be open to public, will help professionals in the field to acquire progressive education in the aspect of sustainable built environments.
The course will also be the first MOOC to tackle sustainable practices within built environments. It will run for eight weeks and lessons will include sustainable application to new energy systems, standard practices in sustainable design like LEED rating system, and the role of ecological urban cities. The first part will tackle principles of sustainability while the second part will concentrate on specific methodologies of sustainable design applied in the built environment.
Students can choose their own level depending on their educational goals. The highest level of involvement will grant students with three graduate credits but they have to meet registration and tuition requirements. Should a student opt for this level, they are also expected to work 14 hours a week on their assignments and other course requirements.
Classes will be delivered through high-quality HD videos, PowerPoint presentations, learning modules, interactive quizzes and participate in the discussion boards.
