Jim Carrey, best known for his roles in films like "The Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," is also a talented painter and collector. On July 25, Bonhams Los Angeles will auction off a portion of Carrey's nearly 30 year fine art and design collection. "Modern Design | Art," the name of the auction, will include thirty-five lots that highlight Carrey's varied taste and admiration for fine art and contemporary design.
Highlighted Pieces
Specifically, Adam Kurtzman's "Pair of Hands," created in 2004, may be sold for the $2,000-$3,000 while the stainless-steel sculpture "Sphere" by Martin C. Herbst created in 1965 may cost within the range $3,000-$5,000. Enumerated in the said collection also are a coffee table by Paula Swinnen that resembles a lily pad and is valued for $6,000 to $8,000, and a table by Joris Laarman designed after a cloud and valued for $60,000 to $80,000.
It also showcases a series of designs of the 60's by French sculptor Philippe Hiquily. These are a console designed in collaboration with Jean Claude Farhi with a range of $20,000 to $30,000 and arm chair with brass and steel that cost about $20,000 and $30,000. Also, a handwoven rug by Alexander McQueen and hummingbirds woven into it, metallic thread and silk are expected to fetch between $15,000 and $20,000.

The fine art lot of the auction consists of big pieces; starting with Kenny Scharf's 'Ice Mont,' a graphic oil painting done in 2014, expected to fetch between $30, 000 to $40, 000 and a work on paper by David Hockney; an artwork depicting one of Hockney's most popular themes - a swimming pool, estimated between $10, 000-$20, 000.These pieces underscore Carrey's discerning eye for art that resonates with both aesthetic appeal and cultural significance.
Photography Collection
Photography enthusiasts will find a curated selection of photographs reflecting Carrey's visual and musical tastes. Other abstract works are those done by Ruth Bernhard and Jacques Lowe; historical photos of the legends such as Bob Dylan, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix are also shown with photos by Danny Lyon, Gered Mankowitz and Astrid Kirchherr.
Carrey voiced his opinion on the auction stating that he enjoys having good art round him and the sheer feeling of passing on great art work to others to enjoy. Carrey's individual artistic career has been developed during the past decade, especially with with politically related cartoons and the nature-inspired paintings. His 2022 NFT, "Sunshowers," intended to reflect on the amount of energy that is given from sunlight; his 2020 phase of painting mangoes embraced life and the cosmos' blessings.
The auction at Bonhams L.A. provides a rare glimpse into Jim Carrey's personal art collection, reflecting his diverse interests and deep appreciation for artistic expression. Any selling of the artwork is anticipated to attract the attention of collectors and admirers of Carrey, who would prefer to possess a fragment of this history.
