Iconic New York Vessel Reopens to Visitors with New Security Features After Tragic Suicide Cases

New York has recently reopened its iconic Manhattan Vessel, but with additional security features to prevent tragic cases of suicides from happening again.

In March 2019, the Vessel took its place in Manhattan's Hudson Yards. With its unique honeycomb design and panoramic city views, the $200 million structure quickly drew in locals and tourists alike.

However, the fun place quickly took a dark turn when CNN reported that a series of suicide cases happened within the year of 2021. It has been closed since then, until recently, when news of reopening hit the media.

The 150-foot modernist structure, a tourist destination and located in the recently developed Hudson Yards, has reopened following a series of suicides and now has a ban on solo visitors. The closure came after three individuals committed suicide after its opening in 2019. Euronews shared that the Vessel is now open to visitors again, but with new suicide preventive measures, including steel mesh nets that will keep people from leaning too far out. However, these mesh are also flexible enough so visitors can take photos of the interior design and the surrounding skyline.

There are now barriers along accessible walksways as well, which unfortunately, limit access to the higher levels and slightly obstruct some views. Regardless, this still allows visitors to explore the area safely. Another addition to the Vessel is the highest accessible point that will offer a secure vantage point of the skyline of Hudson Yards, where guests can take pictures.

Standing at 150 ft., the Manhattan Vessel never lost its public spark even after three years of closure. The developer stated that the team equally shares the enthusiasm of its reopening and has greeted 75 visitors during the first day.

Manhattan is now open every day, starting 10 AM until 9 PM, with free entry for residents of New York every Thursday.
