Zaha Hadid has unveiled new designs for the fifth City of Dream's tower in Macau. The project was commissioned by Melco Crown Entertainment, one of the main developers of casino-gaming and entertainment resorts in Asia. Hadid’s project will be the most recent addition to the company’s flagship property in Cotai, Macau.
The new casino hotel will have 40 floors and a total floor area of 150,000 square meters. The tower will house an estimated number of 780 guestrooms, suits and sky villas. It will also boast of other different facilities such as meeting rooms, events hall, lobby atrium, gaming rooms, restaurants, sky pool and a space. It will also have an extensive back of house areas, and supporting ancillary facilities. With Hadid’s design program, all of these complex hotel areas will be enveloped in a single cohesive structure.
The design features dramatic and grand public spaces combined with spatially-generous guest rooms. Hadid plans on implementing innovative engineering which will be formally cohesive. The rectangular outline of the site will be extruded as a monolithic block. A series of voids will be carved within the center of the tower, which will create a sculptural form that will merge with traditional architectural elements. All of these features will create the definition of almost of the hotel’s internal public spaces.
The resulting design is described as being a dynamic exposed exoskeleton which is both expressive and powerful. There is a great optimization within the interior layout as an effect of the external structure that envelops the building. With the new tower, the form defines its identity and at the same establishes a relationship with the Cotai strip.
The development for the fifth City of Dreams tower commenced in 2013 and is expected to open by early 2017.
