Shea McGee's Utah Dream Home Remodel, Unveiling an Intimate Design Journey
Renowned interior designer Shea McGee, co-creator of the hit Netflix show Dream Home Makeover, recently opened the doors to her residence for an exclusive first look at the transformative remodel she and her husband, Syd, undertook. What started as a practical approach due to budget constraints and the demands of their television show turned into a 10-month renovation project that breathed new life into their 7,500-square-foot home just outside Salt Lake City.
Living in Before Redesign
In 2018, when Shea and Syd built their home, they intentionally left out some features to accommodate their TV show's timeline and financial constraints. However, they chose to live in the house before deciding on the more expensive design elements, a practical approach they often recommend to their clients. Shea emphasizes, "Living in your space before extensive renovations allows your ideas to come from a place of honesty, and that's always important during the interior design process."
Exterior Enhancements and Front Facade Transformation
The couple's recent overhaul extended beyond the interior, encompassing a refresh of original rooms and exterior enhancements. Adding a porch with a copper roof, double columns, and custom bifold shutters transformed the front facade. Working with contractor Killowen Construction and designer Steve Tiek of Tiek Design Group, the exterior renovations became an opportunity to see their original ideas, adding curb appeal and character to the property.
Furnishings That Tell a Story
With the remodel, Shea and Syd used Studio McGee furnishings to curate a harmonious blend of colors, textures, and forms. Each piece was chosen to foster intimacy in a home, from a Hildegard sofa in the living room to an Orville extension dining table in the dining area. Shea comments, "Adding these pieces to our own home allowed us to see how the furnishings live and work in real life."
Functional and Stylish Kitchen Design
Shea envisioned an English-inspired kitchen with modern functionality. Uncompromising on having an unlacquered brass faucet, she worked with Killowen Cabinetry Company for custom cabinetry and used marble from Bedrosians Tile and Stone. The result is a sophisticated yet functional space featuring a Lacanche stove, Scarlett pendant lights, and Greely counter stools from McGee & Co.
Primary Bedroom Serenity and Bathroom Elegance
A Walt bed and Dana nightstand create a sophisticated yet casual interior style in the primary bedroom. The primary suite features a freestanding Memoirs tub from Kohler, with a reclaimed wood beam adding a rustic touch. The design emphasizes functionality and beauty, providing a calming yet personal experience.
Signature Aesthetic in Every Room
Throughout the home, Shea's signature aesthetic is evident. Every area, from kids' bedrooms to powder rooms, is thoughtfully created to provide a unique, soothing experience. The use of neutral color schemes, furnishings with a vintage feel, and hand-knotted wool rugs draws attention to Shea's painstaking attention to detail.
Basement Transformation
Initially neglected, the basement underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a studio space for Dream Home Makeover to a multifunctional area. Dividing the large room into different spaces, incorporating custom-stained wood cabinets, and adding a skate ramp fulfilled Syd's dream. The finishes, including a polished concrete floor and gray plaster texture, were carefully chosen to create a functional yet stylish space.
Shea McGee's home remodel is a testament to her design philosophy, emphasizing practicality, personal experience, and the thoughtful curation of spaces that tell a story. Through this exclusive glimpse, audiences witness a stunning transformation and the evolution of a residence that reflects the essence of Studio McGee's design principles.
