Sprint confirmed Wednesday that users of the Samsung Galaxy S5 through the carrier will receive an update that enables Wi-Fi calling. The GS5 will be Sprint's seventh device to get the feature, Android Guys reports.
Wi-Fi calling allows users to make calls and send messages for free over a Wi-Fi connection. The other devices capable of the feature include the HTC One Max, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4 with Sprint Spark and Galaxy S5 Sport.
Speaking of the GS5 Sport, Sprint will begin offering the device to US consumers starting June 25.
The device, which reportedly differs slightly from the GS5 Active model that debuted on AT&T in late May, will be offered for no down payment for customers interested in 24-months of payments of $27.09 via Sprint Easy Pay. The model will come in color options of Electric Blue and Cherry Red colour options, which look quite unlike the Camo Green and Titanium Grey options offered for the Active variant. The carrier will also offer a $50 discount of the Samsung Gear Fit for customers who purchase the GS5 Sport.
Unlike the Active model, it appears that the Sport variant does not include the US Mil-STD 810G ratings for shock, temperature, humidity, rain and altitude. However, it does feature the dust-proof, shock-proof and water-resistant specs thanks to IP67 certification.
Consumers who purchase the smartphone will find they have preloaded fitness-related apps including MapMyFitness MVP (free for 12 months) and other content such as customised audio coaching, training plans, live tracking and more, according to NDTV. It also comes with free Spotify premium for six months to motivate you will you exercise.
The device's specs list is about the same as the flagship GS5, including Android 4.4.2 KitKat, a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display (1080x1920 pixel full-HD resolution), 2GB of RAM with 16GB inbuilt storage, microSD card expandability up to 128GB, a 2800mAh battery, a 16-megapixel HDR rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
The device also packs an accelerometer, proximity sensor, a gyro sensor, digital compass, barometer, gesture sensor, finger hovering sensor and a light sensor.
