Emerging gracefully along the sea in De Panne, Belgium, Westerpunt by Studio MOTO is a marvel of modern design and ecological sensitivity. This uniquely shaped observation point, which takes the form of a hovering pentagon, seamlessly integrates water, sand, and nature in a sculptural choreography of concrete. Located on the slope of a local promenade, Westerpunt invites passersby to ascend its looping stairs from either side, offering a unique vantage point to take in the surrounding natural beauty.
Architectural Design and Structure
In plan, the Westerpunt observation point takes the shape of an elongated pentagon, constructed from equal stair segments connected at an angle of 108 degrees. Between these segments, Studio MOTO embedded landings and resting points, each offering a unique perspective of the surroundings. The stairs serve as the 'pillars' of the structure, unifying form, structure, and function. Both the pillars and foundation ensure that the observation point can cantilever over the beach and the sea. On the east side, an additional bench provides a resting point with a view through the concrete structure, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
The dynamic, looping shape of the observation tower distinguishes it from its surroundings, arousing interest and curiosity without dominating the landscape. It breaks the linearity of the promenade and enhances the walking experience with its multidirectional aesthetic. The path continues over the bridge as if climbing a high sand dune, creating a seamless integration with the natural environment. The transparency through the structure acts as a lens, focusing on what lies behind and creating a link to the place one is walking towards. This works from different directions, from De Panne to Dunkirk and vice versa.

Unique Views of De Panne
The view of De Panne is unique, partly due to the large nature reserve and the dunes that open up to the beach, setting it apart from other Belgian seaside towns. As the dunes are the city's main asset, the construction of Westerpunt closely aligns with these natural formations in terms of scale, height, shape, color, material, and position. This visual experience reaches a turning point at high tide when the observation point becomes partially submerged in the sea, offering a dramatic and ever-changing landscape.
Constructed for Durability
Studio MOTO sculpted Westerpunt entirely out of concrete, ensuring its texture and color closely align with the coastal surroundings, especially the promenade, and making it highly resistant to the aggressive sea climate of De Panne. Concrete also requires limited maintenance and offers the robustness needed for public structures. Lastly, should the dunes be allowed to expand and stretch around and under the structure, Westerpunt can then stand independently on its own, blending seamlessly into the natural environment.
Westerpunt by Studio MOTO is a testament to thoughtful design that respects and enhances its natural environment. By combining architectural innovation with ecological sensitivity, it serves as a new landmark along the Belgian coast, offering both locals and visitors a unique vantage point to appreciate the natural beauty of De Panne.
