Global architecture and design firm 100architects has revitalized an underused coastline walkway into a vibrant public space on Hengqin Island, China. Known as "Green Skyline," this project transforms the area into a colorful landscape that can be seen from Macau. With its interactive elements and playful design, the new urban intervention aims to offer a fresh destination for socializing and leisure.
The Green Skyline features a series of capsules with unique silhouettes, each designed to provide a distinctive experience. These capsules are deliberately colorful on the outside, creating a visually engaging environment. Inside, they are finished with warm wood, offering a cozy retreat for visitors. "The project adds much-needed amenities and eye-catching platforms that promote outdoor lifestyle and social interaction among citizens, while creating a strong visual identity for Hengqin Island," explains the studio.
Capsules Host Various Activities
100architects have given each capsule a specific purpose to enhance the community's outdoor lifestyle and social interaction. Some capsules are designed for social gatherings and casual conversations, while others are equipped with playful installations like swings, seesaws, and slides, offering entertainment and leisure options for all ages. The city-facing side of the capsules features an array of umbrellas with various seating configurations, inviting visitors to relax and socialize in the shade.
At night, LED strips illuminate the capsules, highlighting their distinctive silhouettes and creating a rhythmic, colorful atmosphere. This lighting design transforms the surroundings into a human-scale urban landmark, making the Green Skyline a vibrant destination day and night.
Interactive Elements and Playful Design
The interactive elements within the Green Skyline project encourage visitors to engage with their surroundings. Telescopes offer a chance to view the distant landscape, while designated selfie spots provide picturesque backgrounds for photos. The playful seating arrangements and installations offer fun activities and foster social interaction among visitors.
Visual and Functional Impact
These colorful capsules can be seen even from Macau, creating an aesthetic view of the Capsules on the waterfront of Hengqin Island. The exterior is decorated in bright colors, while the furniture inside is made of wood. This choice makes the atmosphere as friendly as possible while maintaining the focus on the game. The compatibility of the aesthetic and the function is achieved by making the waterfront an active and appealing public area.
The Green Skyline project transforms the waterfront into an inspiring and functional site, turning an unused area into a stimulating and popular site. Outdoor-oriented and engaging the citizen on a big scale, 100architects has developed a space that encourages social interaction and promotes an outdoor lifestyle. The amenities are not only functional but also set a distinct and visible theme for the future development of Hengqin Island.
100architects' transformation of the Hengqin Island waterfront into the Green Skyline is a testament to the power of creative urban design. The project's colorful capsules and interactive elements provide a new and exciting place for residents and visitors to enjoy. With its focus on social interaction and outdoor living, the Green Skyline is set to become a beloved landmark on Hengqin Island, visible even from afar. This vibrant public space exemplifies how thoughtful design can breathe new life into urban areas, fostering community engagement and enhancing the quality of life for all.
