Ideal Vacation Spots for Architects in Connecticut
Seeing a beautiful structure from a picture is very different when seeing it for real, especially for architects. Most of the beautiful structures in the world are found in Europe but that doesn’t mean it’s the only place an architect can visit. Instead of visiting and revisiting the same cities, there are many other cities an architect can visit for inspiration like New Canaan, Connecticut.
First in the list is Bauhaus by “Harvard Five” which is composed of John M. Johansen, Philip Johnson, Landis Gores, Eliot Noyes and Harvard Graduate School of Design professor Marcel Breuer. Their works were built post the WWII where most of it have survived and are private homes today, according to Arch Daily.
Next is the Glass House built by Philip Johnson in 1949. The structure is a mixed influence of Mies van der Rohe and the famous Harvard Five. This transparent house comes with a bathroom and a fireplace despite not having any walls in the house.
Another work from one of the “Harvard Five,” Eliot Noyes, is his own house inspired from Breuer and Gropius teachings and based on his drawings when he was researching on Frank Lloyd Wright’s works. The house features heavy stones, glass, and natural materials to have a balance of nature. The house even has a wildlife area in the center.
Another beautiful structure in Connecticut is the Gores Pavilion which is maintained today by the New Canaan Historical Society. It is designed by Landis Gores which is inspired by the Glass House. It is intended as a pool house but is now used as a showroom and a museum for the Historical Society.
Aside from Connecticut, there are other places an architect can visit to draw inspiration from. This includes Medellin Colombia, Norway, Denver, New York, Salt Lake City and Miami Beach, according to CNN.
