BIG’s Twisting One High Line Skyscrapers Near Completion in New York City
A new set of images released by BIG shows the One High Line development nearing completion.
The One High Line development consists of two condominium towers, described as "good neighbors" by BIG founder Bjarke Ingels, enclosing a central, public courtyard with retail spaces at the base. The coupled twisting towers share the Hudson River skyline with neighbors such as Frank Gehry's IAC building, Renzo Piano's Whitney Museum of American Art, and Jean Nouvel's The Chelsea Nouvel ('100 Eleventh Avenue'), as well as future works by Thomas Heatherwick and other renown architects. BIG's two condominium towers are organized to define a central public courtyard, which is activated with retail and commercial facilities.
As of November 2023, the building's exterior and "majority of the interior" are complete, with residents now living in the towers. The courtyard is expected to be finished in early 2024.
The towers are about 300 feet (91 meters) and 400 feet (122 meters) tall, with the larger tower facing the water. The West Tower has 149 condominium residences spread across 36 floors, while the East Tower has 87 spread across 26 floors. Residents of both towers will share an amenity space on the third floor, surrounded by a double-height bridge passageway connecting the building's bases.
According to Bjarke Ingels, the geometry of the two towers is based on the principle of designing structures that are 'good neighbors' to one another, so the composition is constantly adjusted to create a balanced yet dynamic image. The character of the Chelsea neighborhood also influenced the design, which took cues from the industrial buildings with their articulated columns and slabs.
When the design renderings for the building were released in 2018, it was called The XI, but it was later renamed One High Line, with Witkoff & Access Industries as developers.
According to the BIG team, it is the last major plot developed in the Meatpacking District.
