ReHome by Cutwork Emerges as a Solution in the Global Housing Crisis

In a world grappling with a severe housing crisis, Paris-based architecture studio Cutwork introduces ReHome, a revolutionary modular building solution designed to address global housing shortages. Conceived initially to tackle Ukraine's housing crisis in times of conflict, ReHome has expanded its vision to provide a versatile and affordable housing solution applicable during emergencies and stable periods. Cutwork emphasizes shelter as a fundamental human right, paving the way for a new era of adaptable and cost-effective architecture.

Founded on the belief that modern cities no longer align with today's world's needs, Cutwork envisions shifting from vertical densification to more elastic spatial usages. ReHome emerges as a response to this vision, offering a swift and deployable alternative to traditional construction methods. The modular construction approach is a testament to its simplicity, breaking free from constraints such as time and location.

ReHome's Versatility and Affordability

At the core of ReHome's innovation is its modular design, akin to stacking LEGO bricks. Comprising 27 sqm modular units, these blocks can be seamlessly stacked to construct an entire residential block, reaching up to six stories. Compared to traditional construction methods, this approach presents a significantly quicker and cost-effective solution, with on-site teams requiring up to 40% less time to complete the building.

To address the critical questions of the housing crisis, Cutwork has meticulously designed ReHome for adaptability. The 27 sqm modular units are the building blocks for various apartment typologies, accommodating families of four to six people while avoiding overcrowding in emergencies. These typologies include Single Units, Side x Side, Stacked Units, L-Units, and Combination Units. Furthermore, five shared spaces, including a Community Kitchen and Rooftop Planted Area, enhance residents' well-being and foster community.

Innovative Design for Well-Being and Beyond Crisis

ReHome's design goes beyond addressing urgent housing needs during crises. Each Standard Living Unit is partitioned into three sections, ensuring flexibility and personal space within the compact setting. The innovative layout includes a small kitchen and dining area, a bed nook and bathroom, and a multi-use living room with floor-to-ceiling windows. The Loft Living Unit also features a mezzanine, providing an extended ceiling height and adaptability for couples or individuals.

The Shared Community, Kitchen & Laundry Units are strategically designed to promote social interaction, enabling residents to reconnect and build a sense of community disrupted by war. This shared space serves multiple purposes: a co-working area, a lounge, and even a small recording studio. This thoughtful design empowers residents to create, collaborate, and process traumatic experiences during crises.

From Crisis to Timeless Homes

ReHome, while initially designed to address immediate crises, also demonstrates a commitment to standing the test of time. Once the crisis subsides, the modular units offer versatile housing solutions for couples, young professionals, students, and older people. Walls designated as non-load bearing allow building owners to easily combine units, creating diverse-sized apartments and ensuring a sustainable and enduring contribution to society's evolving needs.

In conclusion, ReHome by Cutwork emerges not only as a response to the housing crisis but as a beacon of innovation, adaptability, and community resilience. Its modular design and thoughtful architecture provide homes and a vision for a more elastic and inclusive urban future. As the world grapples with housing challenges, ReHome stands as a testament to the transformative power of modular construction.
