Nestled behind a high brick wall, concealed within the remnants of former stables, the Hidden Garden House by Sam Crawford Architects (SCA) in urban Sydney unveils a realm of architectural marvels. Beyond a secluded courtyard lies a staircase leading to a rooftop garden, perched atop a curved concrete ceiling that dramatically defines the living spaces below. This transformative project not only embraces the sky but also ingeniously incorporates nature, light, and a contemporary aesthetic into the heart of a heritage conservation zone

Architectural Transformation

Sam Crawford Architects took on the challenge of reimagining a double-fronted split-level 1980s terrace, responding to the client's desire for a contemporary, light-filled living space. The existing house, with its solid timber stair blocking light and dark internal rooms, underwent a metamorphosis that included a new, inviting white steel-framed stair, replacing the former obstructive structure. This alteration opened up the interiors and provided glimpses of the rooftop garden above.

Upon entering through a central front door, the steel-framed stair becomes a focal point, guiding occupants to the hidden rooftop oasis and the living areas. An enlarged skylight illuminates the central space, enhancing the sense of openness. The curved concrete ceiling in the living area ascends, allowing the entry of winter sun and providing summer shade. Expansive glass walls connect with the sun-drenched courtyard garden, maximizing the benefits of the north-facing orientation and offering captivating views of the surrounding district.

Rooftop Garden Sanctuary

The innovative use of the curved concrete ceiling extends beyond aesthetics, forming the sloped roof garden and open terrace for the main bedroom. An existing en-suite was elevated and repositioned within the new roof garden, offering the owners a unique bathing experience amidst lush greenery. Angled timber screens and thoughtfully positioned plantings ensure complete privacy, creating a serene retreat.

Spatial Reconfiguration

To enhance natural light and ventilation, the lower-level laundry and bathroom entries were relocated to the new stairwell wall. Sculptural skylights were introduced, taking advantage of the changed ceiling heights. The restrained and earthy materials palette, featuring pale eucalyptus-green square tiles, spotted gum joinery, and limestone floor pavers, permeates the entire home, creating a harmonious and calming atmosphere.

Curvilinear Aesthetics

Incorporating curvilinear geometry in various elements, including the kitchen island, splashback, bathroom vanities, cupboards, and door handles, adds a touch of sophistication. Clever storage solutions are seamlessly embedded throughout the design, ensuring functionality and aesthetics.

SCA's commitment to sustainability is evident in the Hidden Garden House. The clients' desire to live without air conditioning prompted the architects to calibrate solar control and high-level cross ventilation carefully. New double glazing, insulation, and a hydronic underfloor heating system contribute to minimized heating and cooling requirements. Integrating a solar system and battery significantly reduces the household's reliance on the grid.

For the clients, the Hidden Garden House has become a peaceful sanctuary that exceeds expectations. The free-form concrete roof, transformative acoustics, secluded garden, and unexpected "big sky" views create a unique and enchanting living experience. Double glazing enhances the acoustic environment and thermal comfort, while the solar and battery systems offer a sustainable and efficient energy solution.

The Hidden Garden House is a testament to Sam Crawford Architects' ability to blend architectural innovation with environmental consciousness. This transformative project breathes new life into a heritage conservation zone and creates a haven where nature, light, and contemporary design converge. As the clients revel in their newfound urban sanctuary, this architectural gem exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of modern living and the tranquility of nature.
