Heatherwick Studio’s Basket-Woven Facade Design to Grace Bogotá’s Architectural Landscape

The appointment of Heatherwick Studio to a key project is a majestic collaboration where they will create a state-of-the-art school and makers' space all at once for Universidad Ean from Bogotá, Colombia. The University of Ean, which specializes in sustainability with the typicality of Colombia's cultural heritage, needed someone to design a building that would show that it is the pride of Colombia. In Calle 72, central Bogotá, Heatherwick Studio's design takes the form of a panpipe basket, which resembles the intricate basket-weaving techniques practiced by Wounaan, an indigenous community in Colombia. This first project brings a studio in the American South region to architectonics. It will add some native art to the city's active scenery to make it more inviting to inhabitants.

A Green Haven In The Urban Jungle Of Bogotá

This visualized all-stories building will allow college students to spend their most memorable moments, blending them with the past by constructing the new educational platform. At its heart, the learning space of Heatherwick Studio does not just contain students and the walls of academia, but it is the place amid the bustle of Bogotá will be the space where students can rest. Eliot Postma, Group Leader and Partner at Heatherwick Studio highlights how addressing the above challenges ties into being truly creative and meaningfully engaging the public through architecture design. The vividly colored building's facade, inspired by Werregue weaving and pertains to the artistic legacy of Colombia, will symbolize it to students and all the visitors, catching them in amazement due to the campus vibrancy.

Innovative Design for Sustainable Living

Whether in terms of its aesthetic decisions or overall pragmatism, sustainability is a huge component of emphasis in Heatherwick Studio's designs. Bogotá's particular altitude and strong sunlight, combined with the uniqueness of our climate, are becoming a significant challenge for the architects that built in this environment and made their facades stand out. In addition to eco-friendly and smart options in this project, the building's materials were carefully engineered to withstand the ever-changing weather in the city. Therefore, this building will last a lifetime. Furthermore, the contribution of the biophilic design to the building will be driven by the natural merger of the forest with the cloud. Different types of plants from the local area will beautify the open terraces featuring the merging of greenery and building architecture, which is in line with the Bogotá commitments as signatories of the C40 Urban Nature Declaration.

A Symbol of Colombia's Diversity So Beautiful

Colombia harbors the planet's second-largest number of species, yet the district of Bogotá can be counted as a city with a strong record of sustainable development in Latin America. The partnership of Universidad Ean with Heatherwick Studio is a distinctive feature that reaffirms the university's stand for preserving and adapting Colombia's natural heritage. The building will manifest Bogotá's live-and-let-live relationship with nature by integrating biophilic principles and local craftsmanship.

Vision for the next step is fixed - groundworks are expected to be launched in 2025. In this regard, Bogotá's architecture is rapidly heading to a new page in its history. The building, with its basket-woven facade and biophilic aspects, would revise modern design standards and pay tribute to Colombia's rich and diverse cultural artwork, through a combination of tradition and creative thinking, Heatherwick school will touch students and urban dwellers as the future generation that sees the creator.
