5 Common Dining Room Design Mistakes to Avoid + How to Fix Them

Believe it or not-having the best dining room design should be a big deal for homeowners.

Besides tables and chairs, it's also where everyone comes together to enjoy and bond over their food. And when you think about the number of conversations, confessions, and probably a few too many arguments that have gone down in them, know that the dining room design has a role in it.

Now, the best dining room design pulls you in better than a Michelin-star-level restaurant.

However, we're all prone to mistakes, and the place where we eat our food in the house is not an exception. Either the table's too small or too big. the light fixture hangs dangerously low, or the tableware is randomly placed in strange places.

Unfortunately, no amount of Gordon Ramsay recipes will make you enjoy your food if you have an uncomfortable dining room design.

5 Common Dining Room Design Mistakes to Avoid + How to Fix Them

Understandably, you want to make the space your space. But dining rooms are not just a space where you eat, it's also where you host so people can gather. Good thing they are also avoidable.

1. Size-Inappropriate Dining Table

While it's true that having a massive dining table speaks luxury, sometimes, it's also great to see if it fits in your dining area. The Spruce mentioned that one common dining room design mistake most homeowners fail to recognize is that sometimes a table doesn't look like it should be in the room.

What you can do to fix this is to measure your entire dining room. The Spruce suggests that you need to put at least 36 inches of space around the table. Otherwise, you're going to struggle every time you sit down and stand up.

2. Designer Chairs

It must feel great to have someone compliment your dining chairs. Some can even be modern, sleek, and like every furniture celebrities have. Unfortunately, the majority are also about as comfortable as sitting on a slab of concrete. According to Havenly, people buy the 'look' of a chair and do not consider if guests will shift uncomfortably every ten minutes.

It's not worth it to sacrifice style for comfort. What you can do if you already have these chairs is to get a cushion that will make you and your guest want to sit longer.

Light Fixture

3. Bad Lighting

Rule 101 for most homeowners is to understand lighting. A common dining room design mistake is when there's either a spotlight shining on your food or a light being too dark you can't even tell what's on your plate. It also doesn't help that your light fixture is too high or too low.

Living etc suggests choosing lights that will create a mood. The first thing to do is to hang the light fixture 30-36 inches above the table and add a dimmer switch so you can have options, especially during normal family dinners or romantic nights.

Centerpiece

4. Distracting Centerpieces

While not the most common dining room design mistake, The Spruce also discussed how homeowners often get too attached to adding centerpieces on the table that it becomes a conversation-blocker. As previously mentioned, the dining room is the perfect place in the house to sit down and talk about your day and not stare at the tall flower vase at the center.

A quick fix for this, and for those thinking about having centerpieces, is to keep it low. A shallow bowl and short candles will work just fine.

Storage

5. Lack of Storage

Your entire home design may be minimalist but it cannot be too minimal when it comes to dining rooms. Don't let any dining tableware or utensils scattered around. Besides the fact that it's unhygienic, it also makes the place, where you're supposed to eat and gather, unruly and distracting.

A pro tip is to invest in some storage. Living etc shared that a sideboard, built-in shelves, or anything to keep the clutter out of sight can immediately make your dining room look clean and well-kept.

Now, there are several common dining room design mistakes maybe because you saw something on Instagram and got inspired. But reality hits like a train when your chairs don't even fit under the table, and you can't see your guests because your centerpiece is too tall. Sometimes, as experts recommend, it's better to measure up your dining room first before anything else.
