Architectural Projects Show New Ways to Integrate Modern Designs in UNESCO Sites Without Compromising History
UNESCO World Heritage Sites are struggling with two things at the moment-climate change and modern renovation.
As reported by ArchDaily, these sites were proposed to undergo contemporary architectural changes while strictly adhering to preservation laws. Architects presenting their projects must reimagine the sites without removing their historical value.
Renovating UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Fortunately, a few architecture firms were able to integrate these modern touches by considering the landscape of the place where they were erected. To set an example, in the same report, the Dutch windmill was renovated minimally that both complements the way it stands with its surroundings and the original designs it has.
Therefore, when tourists visit, they can entertain themselves with the view of the windmills and other functions, like café and cinema. There's a new viewing platform as well, which will visually connect visitors to the sky and water outside.
Other examples include the Bahrain Pearling Trail, which now has a museum-like site and an entrance. Besides that, it came with shades and a space with columns and wind towers. Designboom reported that Valerio Olgalit designed these contemporary touches that will make the experience for tourists more seamless and enjoyable.
Why Intervention Is Needed for UNESCO World Heritage Sites
According to UNESCO World Heritage, the quick growth of urbanization is pressuring historic sites to undergo contemporary architectural renovation without sacrificing their value. Unfortunately, this project will include high-rise constructions and will take more years.
Cities where historic UNESCO sites are heavily investing in more buildings and if these places cannot keep up, they become more exposed to environmental degradation and tourism pressures. An intervention for modern renovation is the only way to keep them preserved and accessible.
