Ikea Releases Limited Edition Furniture Pieces for The Young Urban Generation
Ikea recently unveiled their newest PS collection which targets the young creative crowd of urban dwellers who constantly encounter apartments with limited space.
This collection is a response to a global research survey showing that most of the young urban generation are living in homes with less than 30sqm of floor space. The results also showed that 2/3 of their participants are setting up their homes in an apartment. According to the survey, the participants have also admitted that their lives are quite nomadic as they have either moved twice in the last three years or are not sure how long they’ll be staying in their current homes.
With the growing trend of constantly moving lifestyles and compact living, Ikea created the PS Collection On the Move. With the help of young designers around the globe, the company was able to produce 51 flexible home pieces that cater to the needs of urban living. Aside from being the most flexible collection, On the Move also offers the most affordable pieces in the Ikea range.
Among the designs in this collection include a lean-to-wall shelf system which came from the idea in Japan where rental apartment dwellers are not allowed to drill holes in the wall.
Another design is a multifunctional stool that can be used as a nightstand or a light and has a built-in magazine rack. The collection also includes a narrow bench which can be placed in tight hallways.
According to Gemma Arranz, Ikea UK and Ireland interior design manager, “We were thinking about the needs of the young urban generations that often forgo space to follow their dreams in the big cities.” Arranz added, “The collection is flexible, affordable, beautiful and can be easily moved within the home to maximize the smallest of pieces.”
The PS (Post Scriptum) range has targeted design-savvy Ikea customers since 1994. The newest On the Move collection will be released in Ikea stores starting April 1, 2014.
