Students of Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh won the “design-hack” competition organized by Southampton Solent University and Ikea. Their prize-winning designs are now on display at the Ikea Southampton store.
The students, Hazel Crosland, Emily Braybrook and Emma Chiddle, all modified existing Ikea furniture pieces to create unique and new furniture designs. They received support and technical instruction while attending the Product Design 3D Workshop at Southampton Solent University.
Crosland received the first prize for her bedside table lamp. She also took the third prize for a design for a freestanding lamp. Emily Braybrook took the second prize for her design of an innovative kid’s art table while Emma Chiddle got the fourth place for her dining table design.
Crosland said, “I am hoping to go into architecture and these skills are bound to be relevant to my studies in the future.” She added, “The bedside table lamp is made from an old laundry basket and the free-standing table lamp was originally a glass vase which I filled with fairy lights.”
Barton Peveril’s product design subject faculty head Dave Horwood said, “Southampton Solent and Ikea have given us a great opportunity to promote how well girls do on the product design course and show how the creativity fostered here at Barton Peveril is recognised by universities and industry.”

According to Ikea Southampton’s acting local marketing manager, Alex Soggins, customers of their store are very interested with what the winners designed and they had to make it clear to them that these “design-hacks” are not actually for sale.
Aside from being displayed at Ikea Southampton, the winning designs will also be featured online at www.ikeahackers.net.
